Your Nails Are Telling You Something. Are You Listening?
those yellow and white spots have a story!
Hey,
Look at your nails right now.
No, really, look at them.
See those vertical ridges?
Or maybe little white spots?
Nails that peel and break constantly?
That yellowish tinge?
You probably think it's just "bad nails" or blame it on all the gel manicures.
Nope.
They're trying to tell you something important.
Why Your Nails Even Matter
I know, talking about nails feels superficial. But listen.
Your nails are made of keratin, and they grow from the nail matrix under your skin. This matrix needs a constant supply of nutrients, oxygen, and proper circulation to produce healthy nails.
Your body prioritizes vital organs over nails. So when resources are low, your nails suffer first. They're basically your body's early warning system.
The Weird Thing About Nail Growth (That Explains Everything)
Your nails take 3-6 months to fully grow out from base to tip.
That means whatever shows up on your nail today - a ridge, a white spot, a weird texture - is actually telling you about what happened in your body 2-3 months ago.
Do You Have Those Vertical Ridges?
If your nails have vertical lines running from the cuticle to the tip, you're not alone. Almost everyone over 30 has them to some degree.
But what are they actually telling you?
Mild ridges are normal with aging. Your nail matrix doesn't regenerate cells as efficiently after 30.
But deep, pronounced ridges? That's different.
If your ridges have suddenly gotten worse, check your iron levels. Ferritin should be above 50 ng/mL for healthy hair and nails, not just the bare minimum of 15.
Or…. Do You Have Those White Spots?
You've probably heard that white spots mean you need more calcium.
That's actually a myth.
Those little white spots (called leukonychia) are usually caused by minor trauma to the nail matrix. Maybe you bumped your nail weeks ago and forgot about it. The spot shows up now because nails take 3-6 months to fully grow out.
And if the white spots are actually white bands across the whole nail? That's more serious - get your liver and kidney function checked.
Or…. Do You Have Peeling, Brittle Nails?
If your nails peel in layers or break the second you open a can, listen carefully.
This is one of the most common nail complaints I hear, and it's almost always fixable.
Your nails need multiple nutrients working together, not just one magic pill.
Why Your Nails Are Yellow?
Yellow nails freak people out, but the cause is usually simple.
The obvious one: Dark nail polish without a base coat. The pigments stain your nails. This fades on its own as your nail grows out.
Don't ignore yellow nails. They're trying to tell you something.
What About Horizontal Lines or Dents?
If you see horizontal ridges or lines across your nails (not vertical), that's called Beau's lines.
The line appears at the base and moves up as your nail grows. You can actually calculate when the trauma happened based on how far up the line it is. Nails grow about 3mm per month.
If you're getting these lines repeatedly without any obvious cause, something is chronically stressing your body. Time to investigate.
How to Actually Fix Your Nails (From the Inside Out)
Okay, so you know what your nails are telling you. Now what?
Get your levels checked:
Iron (ferritin, not just haemoglobin)
Vitamin D
Thyroid (TSH, T3, T4)
Vitamin B12
Zinc
These are the big ones that affect nails. Don't guess, get tested.
Protect your nails externally:
Wear gloves when washing dishes. The constant water exposure is destroying your nails.
Use a good cuticle oil daily. Something with vitamin E or jojoba oil. Your cuticles protect the nail matrix.
Don't use your nails as tools. Seriously, stop opening cans with them.
Give your nails a break from polish and extensions. Even "breathable" polish isn't actually letting oxygen through.
Consider supplements if food isn't enough:
Biotin: 2.5-5mg daily Omega-3: 1000mg daily
A good multivitamin covering B vitamins and zinc
But food first, supplements second. Your body absorbs nutrients from food way better.
