Why You're Getting Sick Every Winter (And How to Stop It This Year)
it's not the cold, it's your immune system crying for help
Hey,
Let me guess.
Last winter, you got sick at least twice.
And you probably blamed the weather, right? "It's so cold that's why I'm sick."
Nope.
The cold doesn't make you sick. Your immune system crashing makes you sick.
And it crashes every single winter for very specific reasons that nobody talks about.
The Vitamin D Crisis Nobody's Addressing
From October to February, the sun in India isn't strong enough to help your body make vitamin D. Even if you're outside, even if you're in the sun, you're not getting enough.
A study found that over 70% of urban Indian women have severe vitamin D deficiency in the winter months. We're talking levels below 20 ng/mL, which is clinically deficient.
Vitamin D mean, bones? Nah. It literally activates your immune cells. Without it, your immune system is like a security guard who's half asleep.
This is also why everyone gets sick around the same time. December and January are peak cold and flu season, not because of the weather, but because everyone's vitamin D has tanked by then.
Why "Eating Healthy" Isn't Enough
I know you're eating your fruits and vegetables. Maybe you're even having that haldi doodh every night like your mom told you.
But most of the foods we rely on for immunity are cooked to death in winter.
We make everything garam garam. Pressure-cooked dal, overcooked sabzi, and chai boiled for 10 minutes.
You think you're eating healthy, but your body isn't getting what it needs.
The Protein Problem in Winter
When you're cold, your body craves carbs. Warm rotis, rice, gajar halwa, hot parathas.
But protein is what your immune system is literally made of. Your antibodies, your immune cells, they're all protein.
If you're getting sick constantly, check your protein intake first.
Your Gut Is Where 70% of Immunity Lives
This one surprises people.
Most of your immune system isn't in your blood or your lungs. It's in your gut.
What Works Then? (Based on Real Science)
Okay, enough problems. Here's what you need to do:
1. Supplement Vitamin D (Non-negotiable)
Take 2000-4000 IU of vitamin D3 daily through winter. Get your levels tested first if you can.
Don't rely on sunlight in winter. Supplement.
2. Eat Protein at Every Meal
Aim for 20-25g of protein per meal. That's:
2 eggs + 1 cup curd (breakfast)
100g paneer or chicken (lunch)
1 cup dal + 1 cup curd (dinner)
If you're a vegetarian and struggling, add a protein powder. Not negotiable if you keep getting sick.
3. Load Up on Zinc
Zinc is like vitamin D's partner in immunity. Most Indians are deficient in this, too.
Best sources: pumpkin seeds, roasted chana, sesame seeds (til), cashews.
Or take a 15-20mg zinc supplement daily. Zinc reduces the duration of colds by about 33%.
4. Fix Your Gut First
Before winter hits hard, do this:
Eat 1 cup of curd daily (homemade is better)
Add fermented foods: pickles, kanji, idli/dosa batter
Drink enough water (yes, even when you're not thirsty)
Take a probiotic supplement if needed
Your gut bacteria need backup in winter.
5. Keep Vitamin C Coming (But Do It Right)
Don't overcook your vegetables. Keep some raw or lightly cooked.
Better sources in winter:
Amla (highest vitamin C in Indian foods)
Guava
Bell peppers (raw in salads)
Oranges (but eat them, don't just juice them)
Or take a 500-1000mg vitamin C supplement daily through winter.
6. Manage Your Stress (Yes, This Matters)
Chronic stress absolutely destroys immunity.
Research shows that people under chronic stress produce more cortisol, which suppresses immune function. They're significantly more likely to develop colds after virus exposure.
Whatever works for you: walks, yoga, journaling, therapy. Not optional if you're sick every winter.
7. Move Your Body (Even Indoors)
Exercise boosts immunity, but here's the catch: too much intense exercise can temporarily suppress it.
Moderate exercise (30 minutes of walking, yoga, or light strength training) is what you want.
Don't skip movement just because it's cold outside. Do it at home if needed.
The Quick Winter Immunity Protocol
If you do nothing else, do this every single day through winter:
That's it. Nothing complicated, nothing expensive.
No, You Are Not Weak Or Unlucky
Look, you're not weak or unlucky if you get sick every winter.
Your body is literally fighting with one hand tied behind its back because of vitamin D deficiency, low protein, poor gut health, and indoor air quality.
Fix those things, and watch how different this winter feels.
Last winter, I had clients telling me, "this is the first winter I didn't get sick even once." Not because they had better luck. Because they fixed the root causes.
You can be that person this year.
Or just start with the protocol I shared above. Track how you feel. I bet you'll notice a difference within 2 weeks.

Stay healthy this year.

P.S. Start the vitamin D and protein TODAY. Don't wait until you're already sick. Prevention is 100 times easier than a cure.
