Why You Always Have to Clear Your Throat (It's Not Mucus)

that constant ahem ahem is your body telling you something

Hey,

You clear your throat constantly throughout the day.

Ahem. Ahem. Cough cough.

Sometimes it feels like there's something stuck in there. Mucus that just won't come up.

You've tried everything - drinking water, coughing harder, even those throat lozenges. Nothing helps for more than 2 minutes.

People around you are probably annoyed. You're definitely annoyed.

Let me explain what's actually going on.

The Acid Reflux You Don't Know You Have

This is the number one cause of chronic throat clearing, and most people have no idea.

You probably think acid reflux means heartburn, right? That burning feeling in your chest?

Nope. Silent reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux or LPR) has no heartburn at all. Stomach acid comes up your esophagus and irritates your throat and voice box, but you don't feel any chest pain.

The acid irritates those sensitive nerve endings in your throat.

The Post-Nasal Drip That Won't Quit

You know that feeling of mucus dripping down the back of your throat? That's post-nasal drip.

Your nose and sinuses produce mucus constantly - it's normal. Usually it drains down the back of your throat and you swallow it without noticing.

But when that mucus gets thicker you feel it dripping. It tickles your throat. You are constantly trying to get rid of it.

If you also have a stuffy nose, frequent sneezing, or sinus pressure, post-nasal drip is probably your culprit.

The Dietary Triggers Making It Worse

Certain foods directly trigger mucus production or throat irritation.

The biggest culprits:

Dairy - Milk, yogurt, paneer, cheese make mucus thicker and stickier. Not for everyone, but for a lot of people. Try cutting dairy for 2 weeks and see if your throat clearing reduces.

Spicy foods - Can trigger reflux and directly irritate throat tissues.

Fried and oily foods - Slow down digestion, increase reflux risk.

Coffee and tea - Dehydrating and can trigger reflux. The tannins in tea also dry out your throat.

Cold drinks - Can trigger mucus production and throat constriction.

You don't have to give up these foods forever. Just experiment. Cut them out for 2 weeks and see what happens.

What Actually Works to Clear your throat (Your Action Plan)

Okay, so how do you stop this annoying cycle?

If you suspect reflux:

  • Don't eat 2-3 hours before bed

  • Avoid trigger foods (spicy, fried, citrus, coffee, chocolate)

  • Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches

  • Try taking 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar in water before meals

  • Consider an over-the-counter antacid to see if it helps

If you suspect post-nasal drip:

  • Use a saline nasal rinse twice daily (Neti pot or saline spray)

  • Take an antihistamine if allergies are a factor

  • Use a humidifier in your bedroom

  • Reduce dairy for 2 weeks and see what happens

For everyone:

  • Drink 3 liters of water daily minimum

  • Stop clearing your throat - instead, do a gentle swallow or sip water

  • Try throat-soothing teas (ginger, licorice root, marshmallow root)

  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol

  • Use an air purifier if you live in a high-pollution area

Most importantly: break the cycle
